According to Linda Jaunzema, chairman of the board of the Latvian Children and Youth Diabetes Association, type 1 diabetes patients need continuous insulin injections. There are approximately five thousand such adult patients in Latvia.

Currently, support is available only for children with type 1 diabetes, but support for adult patients is minimal. Jaunzema’s “900 seconds” stated that it would be necessary to include two devices in the list of compensable drugs that would significantly improve the daily life of diabetic patients.

One of them is a glucose monitoring device, which costs the patient 1400 euros per year. In the interview, Jaunzema emphasized that by allowing this device to be used for daily use, the state could save approximately 200 euros per year for each patient, because in this way the person would not use various other health services.

Also, the list of compensable drugs should include an insulin pump, which is not necessary for all diabetic patients, but in some cases, upon consultation with a doctor, it is an irreplaceable daily tool.
