In order to discuss the current situation in the European Union in the current geopolitical situation, a high-level international conference “EU Negotiations 2024: EU as a safe home in today’s geopolitical landscape” will be held in Riga on April 8. The conference is organized by the Latvian Foreign Policy Institute (LAI) in cooperation with the Representation of the European Commission (EC) in Latvia and the Saeima of the Republic of Latvia.
The conference will be attended by Valdis Dombrovskis, Executive Vice President of the European Commission, TEPSA Secretary General, Jim Kloss, former Deputy Director General of the General Secretariat of the Council of the EU (Jim Closs); General Secretary of the Convention of European Business Managers, Dr. Risto EJ Pentile (dr. Risto EJ Penttilä), former President of the European Parliament Martins Schultz (Martin Schulz) and others.
The conference has become an annual tradition and this year will be held for the ninth time. This year, when we celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the most significant enlargement of the EU, special attention will be paid to the achievements of the ten countries that joined the EU in 2004 and the achievements of the European Union in the last twenty years. During the conference, we will delve into today’s geopolitical dynamics, assess the resilience of the EU economy, and discuss important topics such as EU nuclear energy, climate change and agricultural policy. In the field of defence, we will discuss border resilience, migration issues and the EU’s strategic autonomy aspirations. Also, some of the discussions will touch on the EU space initiative and the development of artificial intelligence.
Three face-to-face panel discussions and six online discussions will take place at the conference, which are organized in cooperation with the Institute of International Relations and Political Science of Vilnius University in Lithuania (TSPMI VU), the International Center for Defense and Security (ICDS), the Danish Research Institute – Tænketanken EUROPEas well as Finnish and Swedish foreign policy institutes.
This year the event will be held simultaneously in Riga, Tallinn, Vilnius, Helsinki, Stockholm and Copenhagen.
