“Three years ago, in the spring of 2021, a well-known auction house in Madrid had included in its catalog a religious painting with two figures, attributed to the brush of a disciple of the Spanish painter José de Ribera. The Prado museum sensed that the assumption was wrong, and this could to be a lost work by Caravaggio,” explained museum director Miguel Falomir.

After the warning, the Spanish authorities suspended the auction and imposed a ban on the export of the painting. In turn, experts found out that the work came to Spain in the 17th century, but disappeared from the Royal Collection during the Napoleonic invasion at the beginning of the 19th century and has since been in the possession of a Madrid family.

A relatively short time ago, the painting was acquired by a private person, who decided to auction it with a starting price of 1,500 euros. The price of an authentic Caravaggio work can reach tens of millions of euros, but the most important thing for art lovers is, first of all, the opportunity to appreciate the craftsmanship of one of the founders of the Baroque style. Therefore, with the owner’s permission, the work depicting Jesus Christ will be exhibited in the “Prado” museum from the end of May until October.
