Floods in southern Brazil have claimed at least 56 lives / Article

--

More than 24,000 people have been forced to leave their homes in the state of Rio Grande do Sul due to flooding, with more than 8,000 in emergency shelters.

Brazilian President Luís Inácio Lula da Silva described the flood as one of the worst in the country’s history.

“In the history of Brazil, there has never been so much rain in one place,” the president said at a press conference in the country’s capital, Brasilia.

More than 2,000 civilian rescuers are involved in the rescue operations, officials said, while the Ministry of Defense said more than 900 soldiers were deployed, as well as nine army planes and 98 boats.

So far, 8,000 people have been saved.

The downpours started on Monday and caused widespread flooding and landslides.

Buildings and bridges have been damaged, roads are impassable in many places.
