A woman who survived a 4.5 km long fall after her parachute failed to open during the jump has told what she remembers about the incident that changed her life, writes LADbible.
Emma Carey from Australia wanted to fulfill her dream – to jump with a parachute in the Swiss Alps. However, this dream soon turned into horror – just moments after jumping from the plane. As soon as Emma left the plane, something went wrong with the parachute and the two of them and the instructor began to fly quickly towards the ground.
Emma flew 4.5km, survived a fall, was paralyzed from the waist down and was told she would likely never walk again. Emma was conscious the whole time, which means she has a clear memory of that day and the terrible incident.
She said: “I didn’t pass out. So I remember the fall, I remember the landing, I remember the moment I realized I was paralyzed – all of it. The first thing I felt when I hit the ground was excruciating pain all over my body. I didn’t know where they were coming from, I had never felt anything like that.”
A rescue helicopter was called to take Emma and her instructor, who luckily also survived, to hospital where she underwent back surgery.
Emma shared that remembering this terrible event helps her to be grateful for life. The woman said she felt like she had only ten seconds left to live, and it changed her perspective on everything.
She said: “I think it’s actually really good that I have this memory because it helps me to be grateful. Life has really changed since then and I also realize that every day since then is an extra time that I can to live, so I must celebrate it.
Also, although Emma was told she would be paralyzed, she began to regain feeling in her legs and slowly learned to walk.
After this horrific incident, Emma wrote a book about her experience called “The Girl Who Fell from the Sky”.
She has shared her amazing recovery and hopes it will inspire others not to take life for granted.
