Spain will deliver Patriot missiles to Ukraine, but not the launchers / Article

A “small number” of missiles will be sent, the newspaper said. Each of them costs about a million euros.

Spain has three Patriot systems. One of them has been in Turkey since 2015 as part of a NATO mission to protect against possible missile strikes from Syria.

Germany has announced that it will send the third “Patriot” system to Ukraine.

The British newspaper “Financial Times”, citing sources, reported this week that NATO and European Union (EU) countries are urging Greece and Spain to provide Ukraine with additional air defense systems.

This issue was discussed on Monday in Luxembourg at a meeting of EU foreign and defense ministers.

Kyiv has appealed to its Western allies to provide it with at least seven more air defense systems.

EU leaders at a summit in Brussels last week directly appealed to the Prime Ministers of Spain and Greece with an invitation to hand over part of their systems to Ukraine, the newspaper’s interlocutors said.

“We all know who has them, we all know where they are and we all know who really needs them,” said one of the paper’s sources.

CONTEXT:

Russia’s unjustified and unprovoked large-scale invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, 2022, the Kremlin’s propaganda brazenly promised to capture Kyiv in three days, but the selfless and strong resistance of the Ukrainians prevented the Kremlin from realizing its plans.

After failures, the Kremlin withdrew the army from the Kyiv region, but in the fall of 2022, as a result of a successful counteroffensive, Ukraine managed to drive out the occupation forces from the Kharkiv region and the city of Kherson. In the summer of 2023, Ukraine launched a new counteroffensive, but it was unsuccessful.

On the other hand, in 2024, due to the lack of weapons, Ukraine mostly has to defend itself against Russian attacks, although the Ukrainian leadership emphasizes that it has not given up on the goal of expelling the occupation forces from the entire territory of Ukraine.
