According to the LVĜMC, a very strong frost can cause serious damage to non-resistant plant species or even destroy them. Damage can affect large areas. Therefore, as far as possible, plant protection measures should be taken that reduce the impact of frost, for example, covering plants or watering in the evening before the expected frost.
A yellow level warning will be in effect on Wednesday night and morning, and an orange level warning will be in effect on Thursday night and morning, when the frost will be more extensive and severe.
In the coming night, there will be few clouds, precipitation is not expected, the temperature will drop to -2…0 degrees in most parts of Latvia, only in many places on the coast it will be warmer – the minimum temperature will be 1…5 degrees.
Wednesday will start with sunny weather, but during the day the clouds will increase, in the western part of Kurzeme it will rain a little.
A slow to moderate north, northwest wind will blow, which will be stronger during the day in Vidzeme and Latgale, with gusts reaching 10-14 meters per second.
The maximum air temperature on Wednesday afternoon is 8…12 degrees, in many places on the coast it is cooler – up to 6…9 degrees.
No precipitation is expected in Riga, the clouds will increase tomorrow afternoon. Light to moderate north, northwest wind. The minimum air temperature at night is around 4 degrees, it is colder in the suburbs – close to zero and frost is possible at the height of the grass. During the day, the air will warm up to 8…9 degrees.
On the night of Thursday, the weather will be even colder, the temperature may drop to -5 degrees in places in the east of Latvia.
but due to the clouds, it will be warmer in many places in Kurzeme and the frost will last.
This is the first time that LVĜMC has issued a frost warning. This year, forecasters introduced changes to the warning system, including several potentially dangerous weather events, so that the public is better informed and able to better prepare for weather that can cause damage.
