U.S. ships are involved in the construction, Ryder told reporters, adding that the port could be ready by early May.

Meanwhile, cooperation with the international community to deliver aid to the Gaza Strip in other ways continues, Ryder said.

The US government announced in early March that the US military intended to help establish a temporary port to deliver food, water and medicine to the war zone amid the humanitarian emergency in the Gaza Strip.

It was planned to build a floating breakwater where commercial ships with aid loads could dock.

These cargoes would then be transferred to other ships and taken to a floating barrage where they would be unloaded.

Israel reported that unknown assailants fired mortars at the temporary port site when UN staff visited it.

Palestinian militants are suspected of the attack.

Ryder made it clear once again that the US forces do not plan to enter the Gaza Strip itself, where the Israeli military operation against the Palestinian militant group “Hamas” has been taking place since October 7.
