Other residents are also gradually moving out, because according to the order of the construction board, all 28 apartments must be vacated by Tuesday. May 7, midnight. This is a big blow to the local population.

“I have two children, one in school, one in kindergarten. I told her to get away from home, she was hysterical. Same for me too. I hope that it will be resolved somehow, because I have lived in this house since the beginning of my life, but our house is not in such a condition that we have to go out. Well, no!”
The municipality informed the residents about the further decommissioning of the building last Thursday, May 2, in the evening. The main danger is cracks in the walls, the width of which exceeds one centimeter. Residents say that the mentioned cracks have been there for years, and until now the manager has not known about them either.

Cracks are no surprise to other residents either, but most are ready to leave the building because otherwise they are threatened with punishment. The fine can reach up to 5,000 euros.

Of course, the situation is not cool. It’s not really clear, there are other buildings in Ogre that are in a dangerous condition, people live there, shops inside, everything happens.”
Meanwhile, Christian will not leave the building. He is a Romanian citizen who works in Ogre and has no friends or relatives to stay with.
“Where to go? In my situation, where do I go? The city council needs to come, tell me I have to leave the house, give me another, temporary place to live while I find somewhere to move. But it is not possible for me. I don’t have the strength to fight the system, but if I were Latvian, I would fight against the system, because it is not good.”
The municipality of Ogre region understands the dissatisfaction of the residents, but the local government could not ignore the conclusion of construction experts that the technical condition of the building may even endanger people’s lives.
Patriks Griva, the head of the communications department of the municipality of Ogre region, states that the assessment clearly shows that the building not only does not meet the requirements that any residential building should meet, moreover, the conclusion shows that the building may collapse unplanned.
“If it can collapse unplanned, then we understand that it is a threat to people’s health and life. Upon receiving such a conclusion, there is no other solution than to evacuate people from this building,” says Griva.
The municipality also draws attention to the fact that those residents who do not have the opportunity to move, should apply to the city council, asking for municipal housing. In this case, each request will be processed on an expedited basis. So far, however, no such application has been received in the City Council.
