The plan developed by the Minister of Culture and member of the ultra-nationalist Slovak National Party Šimkovičova envisages the reorganization of the public media and will give the opportunity to get rid of its management as well.

The plan has already been condemned by President Zuzana Čaputova, opposition parties, local journalists, international media organizations and the European Commission, but yesterday the residents also expressed their opinion.

Demonstrators held a placard with the inscription “Hands off RTVS!” and loudly expressed support for journalists. One protester emphasized that it is very important that the media does not spread disinformation at the behest of the state.

At the same time, the action can be considered a protest against other plans of Fico’s government, including the intention to amend the criminal code. There are serious concerns that Slovakia will abandon its pro-Western course and follow the lead of Hungary and its controversial Prime Minister Viktor Orbán because of his cabinet’s policies.
