Dorna Sports today officially announced that Liberty Media, owners of the F1 Championship, have purchased the MotoGP Championship. The amount of the transaction is 4.2 billion euros.

The American company has owned the commercial rights to the F1 championship since 2016. Meanwhile, now “Liberty Media” has also become the largest owner of the “MotoGP” world championship, obtaining 86% of it. “Dorna Sports” will keep 14% in its ownership.

Formalities regarding the takeover of the MotoGP championship will be completed by the end of this year, pending permits and approvals from competition and foreign investment authorities.

Already in 2006, the owners of the F1 championship, CVC Capital Partners, wanted to take over the MotoGP championship. At that time, the relevant authorities believed that the two championships coming into the hands of one company would not be good for the European competition market. It is not yet known what they will decide this time, as the analysis of the case continues.

The “MotoGP” championship has been under the supervision of “Dorna Sports” since 1992. The last public reports in the Enterprise Register are available for the year 2022. They show that “Dorna Sports” worked with a turnover of 474.8 million euros, which was 33% higher than in 2021, but experienced a loss of 7.8 million euros as a result of the pandemic.
