Fell to my knees, survived and realized that I was going to have a big shit…

I thought that everything, the trip was over, I survived, I didn’t know what else I could have done to avoid the accident. The next day, the couple was approached by local motorcyclists whom they had befriended while touring Africa. They have also helped to recover the couple’s personal belongings, provide them with food and even arrange a meeting with the dead woman’s family.

“We were all assured that there would be no prison sentence. I just have to pay for the woman’s funeral,” emphasizes Daniel.

Scrambling together the last funds, asking for help on social networks and accepting money from recently met bikers, the couple managed to collect the necessary amount for the woman’s funeral.

“Compensation for the family is good, but it does not exempt from punishment,” the prosecutor explained to me,” recalls Daniels.

At the moment, the couple is waiting for August 25, when a court hearing has been set, where Daniel’s fate will be decided.

“Sejas” contacted the Minister of Foreign Affairs (MFA), which follows the events of Daniel and Mara in Africa.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms that the Spanish Embassy in Gabon has stopped providing consular assistance to Latvian citizens in Gabon. In the case of Daniela Vēža, the consul of the Spanish Embassy not only consulted with colleagues from other European Union member states in Gabon about similar cases involving citizens of the European Union and provided a list of lawyers available in Gabon, but also participated in the August 12 court session as an observer and provided the detained Latvian citizens with a translation from French into English.
