At the end of February, the State Police, in cooperation with the VDD, began to investigate the attack on the Latvian Occupation Museum, which was carried out by throwing a bottle with an incendiary mixture into the museum. A few days later, the investigation led to the arrest of three persons who are suspected of having committed criminal acts. On April 4, a separate criminal process was separated from this criminal process against the possible organizers of the criminal offense, in which the investigation was taken over by the VDD.

On the night of April 17, the VDD detained the alleged organizers of the crime in Daugavgriva prison in Daugavpils, where they were serving sentences for other criminal offenses. The service suspects persons of providing assistance to Russia in actions directed against Latvia. According to the information at the disposal of the VDD, the attack on the Latvian Occupation Museum was organized using the communication platform “Telegram”, the VDD stated.

On the other hand, at the beginning of the year, on February 8, the VDD detained a dual citizen of Estonia and Russia at the Päternieku border control point, who had desecrated a memorial stone dedicated to Latvian legionnaires in Džukste parish of Tukuma region on behalf of the Russian special service. The person detained in Latvia was one of a larger group who, on behalf of the Russian special service, carried out hooligan activities against memorials and other objects in all three Baltic states.

As a result of the close cooperation of VDD and its Baltic partner services, other members of this group were detained in Estonia. The activities of this group were also coordinated using the communication app “Telegram”.

Also, on April 24 of last year, the VDD in cooperation with the Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIDD) detained two persons, one of whom, along with obtaining intelligence information on military objects on the territory of Latvia, had written slogans in the city environment on behalf of the Russian special service, which creates the impression of support for the aggressor state apparently prevailing in Latvian society. for Russia. The activities of these individuals were also managed using the communication app “Telegram”.

The court sentenced one of the persons to imprisonment for three years, and the other – to two years and eight months.

It has already been reported that, taking into account Russia’s harmful actions in other European countries and the predicted increase in threats to Latvia as well, the service has since the beginning of this year intensified its work in the field of protection of Latvia’s critical infrastructure.

VDD calls on residents to be attentive and immediately inform the service if they notice suspicious activities near critical infrastructure objects. Similarly, attention should be paid to such activities also to memorial places and symbolic objects important to the Latvian people.
