In order to discuss the current situation and problems in inland waters and marine territory and to discuss the sustainability of water resources, the Saeima will host a conference of experts and policy makers on Friday, May 10, “Sustainability of Latvian waters and how to achieve it?”. It is organized by the Saeima in cooperation with the World Nature Fund.

The conference will be opened by Uģis Mitrevics, Chairman of the Saeima’s Sustainable Development Commission, and Atis Labucis, Secretary of the Environment, Climate and Energy Subcommittee of the National Economy, Agrarian, Environmental and Regional Policy Commission. Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development Ilze Dambīte-Damberga and Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Climate and Energy Jānis Irbe will also give speeches.

Two thematic blocks are planned for the conference, and in the first one it is planned to discuss the current situation and achievable goals in ensuring water quality, including water in the European Green Course and what international goals mean for Latvian water resources, as well as policy documents of achievable goals and tasks for the sustainability of Latvian waters.

Also, in the first block, it is planned to discuss the management of Latvia’s inland waters, including hydromorphological transformations and water pollution, as well as the fragmentation of rivers and their impact on migratory fish resources. Another theme of the first block is the path to a good state of the marine environment in the past, present and future. It is also planned to talk about what in the current legislation hinders or promotes water protection in Latvia, and about the appropriate treatment of wastewater before discharge into the environment as a prerequisite for sustainable conservation of water resources.

In the second thematic block of the conference, discussions are planned on the achievement of the set goals, including the use of hydromorphological transformations – dams, hydroelectric power plants, land reclamation – as well as diffuse and point pollution.

Representatives of responsible ministries and institutions, as well as environmental and water quality experts, are invited to participate in the conference.

At the end of the event, it is planned to create a road map for the sustainability of Latvian waters.

The conference will be held on Friday, May 10, in the Baltic Hall of the Parliament, Jēkaba ​​Street 6/8, and it will start at 10.00. Anyone interested will be able to follow its progress on the website of the Saeima www.saeima.lv and parliament Facebook in the account.
