Polish security services say they discovered wiretapping devices in a government meeting room. The two intelligence agencies involved have not indicated who they think is behind the espionage attempt, Deutsche Welle reports.

A Polish security official said on Tuesday that the devices had been found and dismantled in a government meeting room that ministers were about to use. It is unclear how long the devices have been there and the official declined to speculate on who installed them.

As the press representative Jaceks Dobžinskis wrote on the social website “X”: “The State Defense Service, in cooperation with the Internal Security Agency, discovered and dismantled devices that could be used for eavesdropping in the room where the meeting of the Council of Ministers will be held today in Katowice.”

Dobzinski told Polish TVN24 that the device can record both audio and video.

“It’s hard to tell if they were devices that were installed years ago and were not detected earlier” or were installed more recently.”

The discovery comes at a time when Poland and other NATO members are increasingly targets of Russian espionage following Moscow’s invasion of neighboring Ukraine.

It comes just a day after a Polish judge fled to neighboring Belarus and sought asylum over espionage charges he says are “made up”.

In March, Polish authorities said they had raided a suspected Russian spy network in Poland using intelligence provided by the Czech Republic.
