Schools are invited to apply for the Latvian School Team Badminton Championship, which will be held on May 21, at the Sigulda Sports Center after a 5-year break. The competition will be held in the “Badminton 100” relay format, determining the winners in primary school, elementary school and high school age groups. The application deadline is May 17, 2024.

The championship of Latvian school teams will be held in three age groups: primary schools (4th to 6th grade), elementary school (7th to 9th grade), high school (10th to 12th grade). Vocational educational institutions can also participate in the secondary school group, but only players who are studying secondary education can be included in the team. One school can enter only one team per age group.

The minimum composition of the team is 2 boys and 2 girls. The maximum number is 10 boys and 10 girls. You can also apply for more participants, but there is a limit to the number of prizes and medals.

The championship of Latvian school teams will take place in the “Badminton 100” relay format. The match between the teams will consist of 5 separate games until one of the teams wins a total of 100 points in the form of a relay. At the beginning, there will be boys’ singles until the winning team reaches 20 points, then girls’ singles up to 40 points, then boys’ doubles up to 60 points, then girls’ doubles up to 80 points, and finally mixed doubles up to 100 points. In case the score is 99-99, then the 100th point is decisive.

Latvian school team championships are organized by Sigulda Badminton Club and Badminton 100 Badminton Club, in cooperation with Latvian School Sports Federation and Latvian Badminton Federation. The main judge of the competition will be Kristians Rosenvalds.

Applications for the Latvian school team championship must be sent by May 17, 2024 at 20:00, in writing to: [email protected]. The application must include the name of the school, age group, e-mail and telephone number of the responsible contact person.

The participation fee is €30 per school team per age group. In case the school cannot or does not want to pay the team participation fee, students or parents have the option to pay the participation individually. The individual entry fee is €5 per participant, or €3 upon presentation of a 3+ honorary family card valid on the day of the competition.

The goal of the Latvian school team championship is not only to determine the strongest Latvian schools in badminton in three age groups, but also to popularize badminton among students, as an exciting team sport, as well as to promote useful and active leisure time.

“This is an opportunity to show themselves very well for those schools that have a hard time recruiting the big teams needed in sports such as football, volleyball, handball or basketball. It is an opportunity for both large and small rural schools,” says Andris Lukss, president of the Latvian School Sports Federation.

“Although badminton is an individual sport, it is the team competition that attracts the most interest in the world. Club championships are like the main engine of badminton, promoting the interest of the media, sponsors and fans,” says Kristians Rozenvalds, the former general secretary of the Latvian Badminton Federation and the chief judge of this year’s championship.

The first Latvian school team championship was held in 2018 in Salaspils, but so far the last one was held in Valmiera in 2019. In 2020 and 2021, the competition did not take place due to the forced pause due to Covid-19, but was not resumed later.

More information about the competition and application procedure is available on the Latvian school team championship 2023/2024 website.
