Salaspils handball players do not pass the qualification round of the Latvian Cup

The handball players of Salaspils sports school experienced a loss in the first round of the qualification of the Latvian Cup on Tuesday. The women’s team of the Salaspils sports school will play the cup final at the weekend.

The championships of the two Latvian superleagues (both men’s and women’s) and the first league were held this season without elimination tournaments, which are conditionally replaced by the Latvian Cup – a month and a half after the end of the three-league season. In the first round of the qualification for the men’s tournament, the draw had the pleasure of pairing the bronze medalists of the super league “ASK Zemessardze”/LSPA handball players and the third best team of the first league, Salaspils Sports School. The winners of this match will have to play against the handball players of the Murjaņui sports gymnasium in the second round of qualification.

At the very beginning of the game held at the Salaspils sports house, the home team managed to get ahead (2:0, 3:2), but soon the guests took the lead and in the middle of the first half achieved a seven-goal advantage (7:14). Until the break, the people of Salaspils slowed down their breakthrough (12:19), but in the first part of the second half, “ASK Zemessardze”/LSPA handball players had already eliminated the intrigue (16:32). Final score 21:37.

Raivo Ozols scored five goals for Salaspils sports school, Kristiāns Strautnieks, Justs Vidzis, Kristaps Štālmanis and Matīss Strautnieks scored three each. The home team made only 37% of shots in total (opponents 73%).

Only four teams participate in the Latvian Cup for ladies. In the semi-finals on Saturday at 17:00 at home, this year’s bronze medalist Salaspils sports school unit will compete with the state champions handball players from Ludza club “Latgols”, while LSPA and “Jēkabpils sports school handball players have been drawn in the second pair.
