On May 4, 2024, in Berlin, at the Latvian Embassy in Germany, a solemn event dedicated to the 34th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of the Restoration of Latvia’s Independence took place.

Addressing the guests, Ambassador Alda Vanaga emphasized that Latvia has reached the level of maturity when it can confidently contribute to the creation of international security policy.

“Latvia’s experience, gained by surviving the Nazi and Soviet occupations for several decades, is especially useful in the current difficult geopolitical conditions. Our knowledge of authoritarian and totalitarian regimes could be a valuable contribution to strengthening the international security system,” said the ambassador.

Among the guests invited by the embassy were representatives of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, representatives of other ministries and municipal officials, representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Germany, representatives of the Latvian diaspora and other cooperation partners of the Latvian embassy.

The celebratory event was accompanied by Latvian musical pieces by a 30-piece brass band, as well as the Berlin Latvian Choir.

The solemn event in honor of the 34th anniversary of the restoration of Latvia’s independence was held jointly with the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Latvia and the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia and was implemented as part of the public diplomacy program in support of the lobby campaign of Latvia’s candidacy to the UN Security Council. The aim of the campaign is to ensure Latvia’s successful election in the 2025 elections to the UN Security Council for the period from 2026 to 2027, where Latvia is running for the elected member seat for the first time. Its motto is “Together for peace and resilience”. Membership in the UN Security Council would be one of the most important instruments for the implementation and defense of Latvia’s foreign policy interests, and would also allow Latvia to further expand its international cooperation, contributing to world peace and stability.
