On Wednesday, May 8, the Riga City Council’s citizens’ information campaign and the cycle of eight seminars on civil defense will continue with the second seminar “Riga Civil Defense Plan – Know and Participate!”.

“Quickly obtaining accurate and correct information in emergency situations is critically important for residents to be able to better protect themselves and those around them,” emphasizes Riga Vice Mayor Linda Ozola, inviting participants to participate in the second civil defense seminar organized by Riga in a row, in which state and local government leaders will share practical recommendations for residents experts in the field, as well as CERT.lv Cybersecurity expert Gints Mālkalnietis and technology enthusiast Elviss Strazdiņš.

The seminar “Receiving information and risks of disinformation – recommended action that protects” will be the second of eight seminars organized by the municipality, where citizens will be informed about the ways of receiving information and the recommended action in case of danger. Industry experts will inform citizens about the methods that can be used by aggressor countries in the event of a hybrid war, as well as where reliable information can be obtained about actions in the event of a threat. Experts will also give advice to citizens on how to distinguish fake news and which information channels are reliable, both in everyday life and in the event of a military threat or war.

The seminar will take place on May 8 from 18.00 to 20.00 and will be available online on the municipality’s website www.riga.lv and Facebook account @riga.lv. Sign language will be available online. On the other hand, only those residents of Riga who will participate in the seminar in person in the Riga City Hall will be able to ask questions to the experts. Taking into account that the number of seats in the hall is limited, you must apply for the seminar in person by filling out the registration form: https://forms.office.com/e/Sj7ZmfRJd5

As soon as the maximum number of participants is reached, the registration form will be closed.

The civil defense plan was developed in cooperation with a wide range of experts from the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of the Interior, the National Armed Forces and the State Fire and Rescue Service, therefore experts from these fields will be invited to the seminars organized by the municipality, who will explain the issues within their competence.

The Riga civil defense plan is available on the website riga.lv, where also the recordings of seminars and other useful informational materials will be published.

It has already been reported that on March 27, the Riga City Council unanimously adopted the new civil defense plan for the capital, in which algorithms have been developed and concrete advice has been given on how to act for citizens in various crisis situations, including in the event of a military threat. Riga is the first public sector institution that has included practical information for residents in its civil defense plan on how to prepare and act in the event of a military threat, therefore, throughout this year, various educational activities and seminars will be held, inviting residents of Riga to learn to cooperate.
