Until May 31, residents of Riga are invited to submit ideas for participation in the budget competition – Riga

Riga municipality reminds that until May 31, residents of Riga have the opportunity to submit projects for the development and beautification of their neighborhood to the participation budget project competition. The municipality will implement the projects that received the most votes from the citizens, which will improve the environment in the long term.

The total municipal funding for the participation budget in 2024 is 700,000 euros. The municipality will allocate up to 100,000 euros for the implementation of one project.

Project applications for participation in the city of Riga participation budget project implementation competition can be submitted by residents who have declared their place of residence in Riga from the age of 16 and non-governmental organizations registered in Riga. Each person or non-governmental organization can submit one idea. Contest participants are invited to submit projects that will improve the surrounding urban environment, that can be implemented on land owned by the municipality, and that are not of a commercial or religious nature.

Tender applications will be accepted electronically until May 31 at 12:00 p.m., by filling out the project application form and submitting it www.riga.lv or by sending to an electronic mail address [email protected]. Applications can also be submitted in person until May 31 at 12.00 at the Riga Neighborhood Residents Center (RAIC) points on Eduarda Smilģa Street 46, Daugavpils Street 31, Gobas Street 6A, Ieriķu Street 43A and Brīvības Street 49/53.

After the deadline for submission of applications, the tender evaluation commission will evaluate the possibilities of project implementation according to the opinions of the competent institutions. The potentially implemented projects will be put to the vote of the citizens in October. Those projects that receive the largest number of votes from the citizens on the balso.riga.lv portal will be implemented.

Since 2019, the Riga City Council has been holding a competition for the implementation of participatory budget projects. A total of 46 projects submitted by citizens have been supported in the five years of the competition. In 2019, Riga was the first municipality in Latvia to introduce a participatory budget. The new Law on Local Governments stipulates that the participation budget must be implemented in all local governments from 2025.
