The Riga City Council has asked the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD) to clarify whether the moped-like vehicles currently driving on the sidewalks are really the electric bicycles they were registered as.
In an interview on Latvian Television’s “Morning Panorama” program, Riga Mayor Vilnis Ķirsis (JV) stated that the municipal police was instructed to contact the CSDD to find out what the technical parameters of the vehicles currently driving on the sidewalks in the capital are, which look like electric mopeds, but are designed as electric bicycles. .
Kirsis explained that the council does not have the competence to say whether the ride is an electric moped or an electric bicycle. Therefore, if CSDD “clearly and clearly answers that they are mopeds”, then the council will act accordingly.
Meanwhile, zero restrictions on the parking of electric scooters in Old Riga have improved the situation, according to ħirš. However, despite the restrictions, the municipality is faced with attempts by individual merchants to circumvent the rules, allowing customers to leave the scooter wherever they want for a certain fine. “Such cases must be fought, we are currently collecting materials,” said the politician, promising to bring order.
“If the merchants themselves will not be socially responsible and believe that they can act as they want, then in the worst case we will have to ban this practice in Riga,” warned ķirsis, while admitting that for the time being he wants to scare unscrupulous entrepreneurs with the fact that the municipality has such a tool at its disposal.
