“The proportion of the collected taxes that goes to health care in Latvia is much lower than the average in the European Union and also noticeably lower than in Lithuania and Estonia,” Valdis Keris, chairman of the Health and Social Care Workers’ Union, told the TV24 program “Press Club”. .

Due to insufficient funding, we are losing about 4,000 people who could have been saved if there had been adequate funding, according to data from the OECD and the European Commission,” Keris admits.

He points out that if financing of the health sector had been a real priority of the government in Latvia in 2000, there would be 40,000 more working-age residents and GDP would be 4% higher.
