Martina and Karina Memmeni The homestead and the Lodēni houses are located on the outskirts of Bauska, in the upper reaches of the Lielupe. In the 30 hectares inherited from Mārtiņš’s father Jānis, the family engages in sheep farming. There are 200 Latvian blackheads and teks in the herd. This year, the mare Pamella was bought for the joy of Karina and the whole family, and in the summer, a lively foal was also happy in the pasture landscape.

The tenacity of the ancestors helps
Their three sons, adults Christian, Norbert and Eduard, who is still in school, are their reliable helpers. Everyone, of course, except Eduard, is employed. Karina, nurse, with a master’s degree in health sciences, Mg. sc. cf., eldest son Kristians, NMPD doctor, both shift work in Riga. Karina admits that in this mode, you can plan your time well for farm duties. Norberts is a 4th-year student at RTU’s Faculty of Electrical and Environmental Engineering, while Mārtiņš works as the head of the Volunteer Firefighters Association in Bauska. He says that in a small farm, without regular side income, all the family’s needs cannot be met. They started thinking about sheep breeding around 2008/2009. year, when Mārtiņš inherited the property and had to consider how to maintain it and what to do with it. The idea of ​​selling or renting to a stranger was not acceptable in any way, and it was decided to manage the land ourselves. In the beginning, the idea was for a small herd of sheep, giving them the role of a mower, but the work makes the doer…

The farm was cultivated by Zelma and Vilis Memmēni during the first free state. Grandfather was engaged in fruit growing and was a knowledgeable dairy farmer. Vilis combined work at the collective farm with work In the balls. Over the years, Mārtiņš’s father Jānis took responsibility for the house. 20-30 years, a large orchard was planted around the house, part of it is still visible today, but on the south side, on the slope of the river, grapes and cherries grew. In lodens there was a large herd of cows and a large flock of chickens. Homemade butter and cheese for export. Eggs have also traveled to Germany and England. In the balls An ice cooler was built during my grandfather’s time, which was a high-quality place for cooling and storing products in those days, but in 1928, electricity was first brought in, which was a big event in the nearby area…
