Mārcis Šneiders, a soldier of the National Defense Service, demonstrated to Latvian Television the tent in which he stays with other young people during military training: “We sleep in this tent. We put our bags outside here so that it doesn’t interfere with sleeping inside. Let’s go inside and see how it looks, as they say, we have a stove in the center. There are sleeping areas.”

Marcis has already spent three months in the National Defense Service, just like Amanda Becker. She said: “I applied for the National Defense Service to improve my physical abilities and make new friends, as well as learn new skills.”

Young people are satisfied with the course of the service. At the moment, they are gradually learning shooting skills, and they are happy with the acquired skills to navigate and survive in the forest.

The young soldier Marcis Schneider pointed out: “The hardest part was the last forest, where we had to stay awake all night. We had to be on duty, guard our flag. A circle was made with the flag in the middle. We had to guard it so that the opposing team wouldn’t take our flag. We had to sit up all night, guarding , to be checked.”

On the other hand, Amanda Becker admitted: “What I like most is that it challenges you, pushes you beyond the limit, tests your mental and physical abilities.”

In the military exercises “Lightning 2024”, which lasts for five days, young people must perform specific tasks on this day. “Today we are guarding a communications tower that provides communications between all subunits of the battalion,” said Trooper Becker.

But soldier Schneider added: “Today we will sit at the posts, where we must watch so that the enemy does not come. If he comes, then we must report whether he is coming at us from the left or the right. Then the other team members will go to help protect the post.”

Both soldiers of the State Defense Service say that they will definitely celebrate the Independence Day of the Republic of Latvia, May 4.

“My family and I will get together, sit down at the same table and celebrate. We will celebrate a holiday, celebrate a free Latvia, a free homeland. I like my homeland, I like where I came from, where I was born. Latvia is a beautiful place,” said female soldier

Young people will still have to spend eight months in the National Defense Service.
