“Livonia” wins the first stage of the Latvian championship in rugby-7 in Baldone

With the victory of the “BalticXL/Livonia” rugby club “Livonia” team in the final over the hosts “Baldones” rugby players, the first stage of the Latvian championship in Olympic rugby-7 ended on Wednesday. The second stage is planned for May 18.

Nine teams participated in the tournament at Baldones Stadium, which played two matches each in three subgroups in the first stage, and the four best teams secured a place in the semi-finals after the overall ranking. In the fight for a place in the final, the main team of the rugby club “Livonia” “BalticXL/Livonia” defeated “Fēniks” of Valmiera with 43:0 (19:0), and in the second semi-final, the winners of the first two places of the last year’s championship, the rugby players of “Baldones” from Ķekava region. , were on the losing end at the beginning of the match, but beat “Miesniekus” 24:5 (7:5).

In the final, the Baldonians took the lead at the beginning of the match (7-0), but they scored the next points only at the very end of the game. At the very end of the first half, the rugby players of “BalticXL/Livonia” scored two touchdowns (14:7), three more in the second half (33:7) and, having apparently retained more strength at the end of the unusually hot day, secured the victory 33:12.

“Miesnieki” of Ķekava defeated “Fēniks” of Valmiera 31:7 (12:7) in the match for the third place held earlier. Rugby club “Mītava”, RK “Eži”, “Garkalne/Livonia”, “Jūrmala” and “Lāči” of Rāmava ranked in the next places.

In May, five more games of the Latvian rugby-15 championship are planned (including three in Upesciem with the participation of RK “Livonia” teams), as well as the second stage of the Latvian rugby-7 championship on May 18 in Baldone.

At the end of last week, the first stage of the Latvian championship in rugby-7 was played by the youth of the U18 age group. In the six-team competition, the “Livonia”/Rīga team became the winners, which defeated the Baldones/Ķekava district sports school team 31:5 in the final. The next places were occupied by the young rugby players of “Eleja JNSC”, RK “Mītava”, ĶNSS/”Griežni RTK” and “Livonia”/Engure. The second stage of the championship is planned for the beginning of June.
