Starting today, the Riga municipality will participate in the “NetZero Pilot Cities” project together with several other European cities with the aim of promoting the reduction of CO2 emissions in the city, LETA was informed by the External Communication Department of the Riga City Council.

The municipality explains that cities play an essential role in achieving the goal of the European Green Course, to reduce emissions by 55% by 2030 and achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

The goal of the European Union (EU) Climate Mission is to help 100 cities, including Riga, become climate neutral and smart already by 2030, ensuring that these cities act as centers of experimentation and innovation and serve as a model for all other EU cities.

In the course of the project, it is planned to promote citizens’ participation in the development and implementation of the city’s strategic documents, assess the compliance of strategic documents with the needs of society and the environment, test innovative tools and processes in the city center with the aim of reducing air pollution, as well as strengthen the competence of municipal employees and stakeholders.

Cities such as Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Brussels, Berlin and others participate in the “NetZero” program and have received funding. The total cost of the project is 557,414 euros, which is fully covered by EU funds from the “Horizon” program.

In Riga, the project will be implemented by the Riga Energy Agency together with the Strategic Management Department of the City Development Department of Riga Municipality, the Smart City Development Department and the non-governmental organization “Green Freedom”.

LETA has already reported that the Riga City Council’s Housing and Environment Committee supported the participation of “Riga Energy Agency” in the “NetZero Pilot Cities” project.

The duration of the project is planned for two years.
