The State Police has completed the investigation in the criminal proceedings against one person for causing intentional grievous bodily harm, as a result of which the victim later died. The materials of the criminal trial have been handed over to the Prosecutor’s Office of Riga Pārdaugava for the initiation of criminal prosecution.

On December 17, 2022, the Emergency Medical Service received a call to an apartment in Riga, Torniakalna, where there was a man born in 1957 with obvious bodily injuries in the head area. The Emergency Medical Assistance Service informed the State Police about the mentioned fact. The man was taken to a medical facility, but died of his injuries on December 19, 2022. In connection with the incident, a criminal proceeding was initiated on the same day.

The 1st Department of the 1st Office of the Criminal Police Department of the State Police Riga Region Administration began to explain the circumstances of the incident and, conducting a series of investigation and special investigation activities, arrested a woman born in 1940 in May 2023 on suspicion of committing the aforementioned crime. She had not previously been caught by the police.

The investigation revealed that on December 17, 2022, the man had come to visit the woman and consumed alcoholic beverages. At some point, due to circumstances unknown to the pre-trial investigation,

the woman seriously injured the man by hitting him with a blunt object, most likely a frying pan, at least 15 times in the head area.

The criminal process is qualified according to the third part of Article 125 of the Criminal Law, namely for the infliction of grievous bodily harm, which was the cause of the death of the victim due to the negligence of the perpetrator. For such a crime, the law provides for deprivation of liberty for a period of three to 15 years, with or without confiscation of property, and with or without probation supervision for a period of up to three years.

The suspect was also placed on a security measure that is not related to deprivation of liberty.

The State Police reminds that no person is considered guilty until his guilt in committing a criminal offense is proven in accordance with the procedures prescribed by law.
