Monday, May 6, from From 11.00 to 15.00 Ventspils will host the bicycle orientation event “Footprints of Europe in Ventspils”, inviting residents of Ventspils and guests of the city to spend their time actively, getting to know important places in Ventspils in an exciting adventure, which have been renovated or built thanks to funding from European Union (EU) funds. Participation in the event is free.

20 years ago, on May 1, 2004, Latvia became a full member state of the European Union. Membership in the European Union has made it possible to receive funding from European funds for the construction, reconstruction or renovation of objects of importance to citizens – educational, cultural, health institutions, streets, bicycle paths, engineering communications and others. The bike orientation event will allow you to visit some of these places and get to know Ventspils from a different point of view. You can familiarize yourself with the regulations of the event HERE!

The organizers invite you to register your team for the competition in advance by filling out the application form HERE! The team can have from one to four members. The team starts together and finishes together, all team members must be in each point. If there are children under the age of 7 in the team, these team members may not count towards the total number of team members.

The start and finish of the event is planned at the main library of Ventspils, where the “Europe Direct Ventspils” information point is located. On the day of the event, May 6, from At 11.00 a card with 20 objects will be given to each team at the starting point. The task of the team will be to find the specified objects in life, find clues with a description of each object and answer the question. The length of the distance depends on how skillfully the teams will find the objects, but the approximate distance is around 10km.

In the start and finish area of ​​the event, orientation participants and supporters in the European tent will be invited to get to know the European Parliament, the European Union, as well as to find out why they should vote in the European elections on June 8. With the help of an interactive stand, everyone will be able to compare European and personal values. There will also be creative workshops, you can take part in a quiz and win prizes, as well as treat yourself to tea and coffee.

To participate in the event, you do not need professional orientation skills or prior knowledge of European projects, all information will be available on site. During the competition, participants are allowed to move only by bicycle or, if necessary, push it. The use of a car, scooter, electric bicycle or any other motorized vehicle is not permitted. The methods of finding objects are up to the participants themselves – it is allowed to use the Internet, communicate with friends, communicate with people on the street and perform other similar actions at their discretion.

When participating in the event, safety comes first, so participants must commit to complying with the Road Traffic Rules, as well as certify that their health condition is adequate to compete in the relevant stage of the event. The participant needs a bicycle, a helmet (mandatory for children under 14).

All teams that have answered 90% of the questions correctly will take part in a draw that will take place on Europe Day, May 9, EuropeDirectVentspils on the Facebook page. Five teams will be awarded, which will be awarded by lottery. The prizes will be presented on May 11 during the opening of the Ventspils summer tourism and cycling season, or will be delivered individually if the winner is unable to attend the event.

The event in honor of 20 years since Latvia’s accession to the European Union is organized by Europe Direct Ventspils in cooperation with the European Parliament office in Latvia.
