As part of the lesson, students also learned about two international projects of the municipality in the field of environment – Baltiplast and Re-Gen.

The project “Baltic approach to dealing with plastic pollution in the context of the circular economy” (English “Baltic Approaches to Handling Plastic Pollution under a Circular Economy Context”) BALTIPLAST / nr. C021 is implemented within the framework of the European Union’s INTERREG Baltic Sea region program for 2021-2027 in cooperation with 5 countries of the Baltic Sea region: Germany, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia. Its purpose is to inform the public about the measures to be implemented to reduce the amount of single-use plastic waste in households, offices and on the streets, as well as to increase the amount of recycled plastic, thus contributing to the reduction of the amount of plastic waste in the Baltic Sea region. BALTIPLAST focuses on responsible use of resources, changing the mindset and behavior of consumers.

Project “Adaptation of public outdoor space for sports activities in the urban environment for the promotion of youth participation / Public space regeneration through integrated urban sports hubs for the participation of young citizens”, Re-Gen, No. 20269 is implemented with the financial support of the European Union interregional cooperation program URBACT IV. In 2024, the municipality has started the development of an integrated action plan for revitalizing the public outdoor space of the municipality, emphasizing the promotion of youth participation through sports activities. In the framework of the development of the action plan, the involvement of city school students is essential, identifying the existing opportunities for spending free time in the city’s public outdoor space and obtaining the vision of young people about the development of public outdoor space in the near future. In this context, it is no less important to talk to young people about their lifestyle and daily habits through the prism of sustainability.

The 9th and 11th grade students of Daugavpils Friendly Invitation High School actively participated in the lesson – both discussing how to make the environment in the neighborhoods of Daugavpils more youth-friendly, as well as ecological issues, talking about the importance of waste sorting and types of plastic waste.
