Starting from Kārsava, around 700 trucks are parked on the side of the road, whose purpose is to cross the border control point in Grebnev. The queue has already formed almost 20 km long. Locals in Kārsava are especially not happy about this situation and do not understand why it is.

Truck drivers find that standing in line for almost a week. Entertaining yourself as best you can – one is watching movies in the car, the other is discussing with the neighbors.

The truck driver Artur does not hide that the great dirt on the side of the road is the fault of the drivers themselves. Most people are not shy about throwing garbage on the ground. It is true that the waste containers are located far from each other. There is also a lack of small houses.

“Latvijas Valsts ceļi” assumes responsibility for cleanliness. In a written letter, it is revealed to us that the total funding for the cleaning of border road separation lanes for the year is 200,000 euros, this year 52,397 euros have already been spent in three months, of which 21,289.89 in March, but the amount has increased even more in April.

“Latvian National Roads”

Toilets are cleaned twice a week, garbage containers are emptied and garbage taken out once a week, the road separation lane is cleaned once a week. In order to carry out an even greater amount of work, to place an even greater number of containers and toilets, the funding available per year must be increased two to three times, up to 500,000 euros. We draw your attention to the fact that no additional funding has been allocated for the cleaning of border roads, and the aforementioned works are carried out from the budget for the maintenance of national roads at the expense of other works in the national road network. Also, in order to place a larger number of containers and toilets, parking lots would have to be set up to place them, which would require additional costs.

Drivers are convinced that changing the order of crossing the border would solve all this mess at the border.

Sandra Kārkliņa-Ādmine, deputy director of the SRS customs administration, explains that since the introduction of the sanctions, they have been working under a heightened control regime, which is why only around 100 cars can pass through the border per day.
