In rural tourism in Latvia, this year could be better than last year, said Asnāte Ziemele, president of the Latvian rural tourism association “Lauku ceajāts”, in an interview with the TV3 program “900 seconds” on Thursday.

She stated that the industry is relatively optimistic about the situation this year, expecting that the summer of 2024 will be better than last year.

Among them, Ziemele mentioned that the number of foreign tourists in Latvia is increasing. “It’s much better than last summer and the whole year in general,” she said, adding that according to the announcement of tour operators, this year there are more reservations from distant countries as well.

At the same time, the president of the association noted that this spring, a trend has emerged when people make decisions very late and make reservations very late, thus making it difficult for tourist accommodations to plan. “People make more spontaneous choices about traveling. It’s not easy for small rural entrepreneurs who have to plan, if only to prepare breakfast in the morning,” said Ziemele.

She also pointed out that competition in the industry has significantly increased since the Covid-19 pandemic.

The goal of “Rural Traveler” is the development of rural tourism in Latvia in the context of the overall rural economy, in cooperation with agriculture, local government, nature protection and other sectors. “Rural traveler” represents the interests of its members, is involved in the creation of policies favorable to entrepreneurs, serves as a professional information forum and a marketing platform.
