The Legal Commission of the Saeima is scheduled to discuss today the strengthening of penalties for violations in the field of road traffic.

The meeting is scheduled at 10 a.m. at Jēkaba ​​Street 16, room 118, and this issue is expected to be viewed as the second item on the agenda.

With amendments to the Road Traffic Law, stricter penalties are set for exceeding the permitted speed by more than 60 kilometers per hour.

As the LETA agency was previously informed in the Press Service of the Saeima, with the amendments it is planned to determine that for exceeding the speed from 61 to 70 kilometers (km/h) per hour with mopeds, motorcycles, passenger cars and trucks, the gross weight of which does not exceed 7.5 tons, the vehicle the driver can be fined from 720 to 960 euros (currently – from 360 to 480 euros) and banned from driving for nine months (currently – six).

On the other hand, if the mentioned amount of speed will be exceeded in a populated place, it is planned to apply a fine from 1040 to 1400 euros (currently – from 540 to 680 euros) and take away the right to drive vehicles from nine to 12 months (currently a ban on the use of rights is applied for 12 months).
