Already this Saturday, April 27, the Great Talk will take place throughout Latvia. Although the amount of empty beverage packaging in nature has significantly decreased, part of society still tends to throw them into the environment. Therefore, SIA Depozīta Iepakojuma Operators (DIO) reminds that if packages marked with the Latvian deposit mark are found, they can be handed over to deposit points in order not only to ensure their 100% recycling, but also to receive a reward – 10 cents for each package. Currently, an average of 85% of beverage packages are returned to the deposit system.

Current observations of environmental organizations show that the amount of empty beverage packaging in the environment has significantly decreased since the introduction of the deposit system – for example, the number of plastic bottles on the Latvian sea coast has decreased by 61%1. However, these results do not rule out that part of the packages may end up in nature due to careless human actions. Therefore, I advise the collectors to be attentive and prepare an additional bag for the empty container, so that it will be more convenient to transfer it to the deposit system. On the other hand, the recovered deposit fee will be a thank you award from nature this cleaning season, which can be used to organize a small picnic for yourself and your friends or to donate the deposit fee to one of the four charitable causes offered in the ATMs,” says Miks Stūrītis, chairman of the board of SIA Depozīta Epakojuma Operators.

A study conducted last October2 the results show a very interesting relationship – although the majority (82%) of the Latvian population admits that the deposit system is necessary so that less waste ends up in nature in Latvia, this same factor – less waste in nature – motivates only more than half or 52% of the population to use the deposit system . The main motivator for using the deposit system remains the recovered deposit fee – this is indicated by 61% of respondents. “By combining the mission of Lielas Talkas with the motivating factor of the deposit system in terms of the recovered deposit fee, we have the opportunity to take care of Latvia’s forests, meadows, coasts and other favorite recreation areas. May we manage to keep this promise to nature not only during the cleanup, but also throughout the year!” invites M. Stūrītis.

Find the nearest deposit point to the cleaning place

In order to make handing over empty beverage packages as convenient as possible, DIO recommends that you familiarize yourself with www.depozitapunkts.lv the displayed interactive map to find the closest deposit point to your cleaning location. Before handing over the package, make sure that it is not significantly damaged, is completely emptied and has a clearly legible barcode and deposit mark on it.

On the other hand, if damaged packages or packages without a deposit mark are found during cleaning, they cannot be transferred to the system – such packages must be placed in the existing waste sorting containers.

Current information about the deposit system is available on the website www.depozitapunkts.lvas well as “Deposit point” Facebook and Instagram in the accounts.
