Kristopan on national defense: Air defense systems should be deployed not in Zilupe, but throughout the country, as is the case with Israel

“The residents of the border area in Latgale are already in a state of apathy, that’s clear,” is how the 14th Saeima deputy (LPV) and former Prime Minister Vilis Kristopans began his comment on Latvian border protection measures in an interview on the TV24 program “Ziņu top”.

“You see, in general, the strengthening of Latvia’s security should be even more modern than what happened, for example, in Israel when there was an attack by Iran, or as it is happening now in the war in Ukraine. There must be modern protection,” Kristopan is convinced. “What will it do if we dig those ditches there? And there are still wise people who say that mines should be placed there so that those moose, wild boars, deer explode in the air every night… First of all, that protection should be very professional,” says the 14th Saeima member.

Secondly, according to Kristopan, the defense must also be very modern. “With very powerful anti-aircraft systems, which should be deployed not in Zilupe, but all over the country, as Israel has – this modern an umbrella. And it takes an insane amount of money!” emphasized Kristopan. He agrees, however, that everything that is done is not completely useless, because “those military people also come up with something good”. However, the deputy does not really agree with what has been said that with the implementation of national defense projects, jobs will now be created on the border.

“It’s pretty funny! That poor logging company and the few companies that are still there, those military men will come and call those loggers of theirs: come work for us digging those ditches because we’ll pay you more! That poor logging company will find itself completely without working hands, because there is a catastrophic lack of working hands,” Krištopans outlined the situation in the TV24 program “Ziņu top”. “That’s what they are increases the number of jobs,” in its figurative sense, the increase in the number of jobs at the border, explained Kristopan. “A double-edged sword,” he thinks.

Kristopan admits that in order to strengthen the eastern border, some “entrepreneurs with large equipment” will be attracted to build anti-tank fortifications. “Okay! Let them do it, but it is not what will save Latvia. There should be much bigger resources – billions, that’s my opinion,” summed up Kristopans in an interview on the TV24 program, discussing Latvia’s national defense plans and security strengthening issues.
