The woman says that completely healthy trees were removed. “Who did they bother? Was there permission to cut the trees?” she asks, saying that “it hurts my heart to look at the stumps.”

A permit for cutting down nine trees on Ganību street 197/205 has been issued.

For the felling of one horse chestnut and seven ash-leaf maples, damages amounting to a total of 946 euros have been determined, which must be credited to the council’s Environmental Protection Fund.

This amount has already been paid, confirms Laura Vīva, chairwoman of the Greenery Monitoring Commission of Liepāja municipality.

SIA “Neredzīgo biedrības Liepājas úmensas” applied to the commission with an application about cutting down trees.

It states that the “Drift Arena” entertainment center will soon open its doors at Ganību Street 197/205. In the territory, the facade of the building is being repaired, the windows of the facade, the road surface have been replaced, and parking lots are also planned.

Permission to cut down trees has been requested so that a situation does not arise where the existing trees threaten property, infrastructure operation, human health, life,

because there are a lot of people moving along the adjacent sidewalk, including mothers with prams, people with vision problems and cyclists, as well as in order not to cause damage to the cars that will be parked in the designated parking space.

After surveying the trees, the commission issued a permit to cut down nine trees (cutting down the tenth tree – Caucasian plums – does not require a municipal permit), determining that the land owner or legal possessor must compensate for the loss of natural diversity in connection with tree felling in the city.
