A series of violent attacks on politicians in Germany over the past week have sparked outrage, prompting a special meeting of federal interior ministers. German officials have expressed concern that such political violence threatens the fundamental principles of democracy and recalls the dark times of Nazi rule in German history.

The number of violent attacks on politicians – especially on the left and the green – has been increasing rapidly in Germany in recent years. Most of them took place in East Germany, and the attackers were from the extreme right. Germany’s domestic intelligence service BfV in its annual report called far-right extremism the biggest threat to German democracy.
