The motive for the attack, which took place at a local hospital in Zhenxian in Yunnan province in the southwest of the country, has not been made public. The suspect is a man from a nearby village, Zhenxiong police said.
An eyewitness told the “Kunlun” portal that at least one doctor was injured in the attack. A video shot by an eyewitness shows people bleeding and lying on the floor.
A TV channel in Guizhou Province published a video showing a man being taken away by the police.
Photos published by the state news portal “Penpai Xinwen” show a man pointing a knife at another man holding a stick in the hospital lobby. Police officers are also seen at the scene.
An investigation has been launched into the incident, which happened in the morning local time.
Mass violence is rare in China. Its citizens are prohibited from possessing firearms, but there have been several stabbings in recent years.
