In his statement, Rīgikogu strongly condemned Russia’s war against Ukraine and the illegal annexation of territories conquered during this aggression, stating that the terrorist regime of Russian leader Vladimir Putin, with its threats of readiness to use nuclear weapons, has become the main threat to peace in Europe and the world.

The parliamentary statement also emphasizes that the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, has openly supported the Kremlin’s aggression since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, but the Moscow Patriarchate has called the aggression in Ukraine a holy war against Ukraine and the entire Western world, and has also declared that Russia’s sphere of influence extends beyond the territory of the former Russian Empire.

Such a position of the Russian Orthodox Church poses a threat to Estonia’s security and existence, including a direct threat to Estonia’s social and constitutional order, the statement said.

The document was supported by 75 MPs, while 6 lawmakers from the Center Party and two from the far-right Estonian Conservative People’s Party (EKRE) voted against it.
