Lidia Stepanivna Lomikovska and her family decided to leave the front-line town of Ocheretyne in eastern Donetsk region at the end of April this year, when Russian troops approached the town and fighting broke out in its vicinity. The Russians are slowly advancing into the area, firing artillery, drones and bombs at the already depleted and out-of-munition Ukrainian defenders.

“I woke up to shooting all around – it was so scary,” Lomikovsky said in an interview published by Donetsk police. In the chaos of the evacuation, senior citizen Lomikovska lost her son and two daughters-in-law, one of whom was injured by shrapnel from an exploding projectile a few days earlier. The younger members of the family had chosen to take detours out of town, but Lydia wanted to stay on the main road.

Lomikovska said that she fell twice on the way and sometimes had to stop to rest. “Once I lost my balance and fell into the grass. I fell asleep… for a bit, but then I forced myself to get up again and keep going. And then I fell a second time, but I was able to get up again. I muttered to myself that we should not stop, but go further gradually,” said Lomikovska.

Police representative Pavlo Diachenko said that Ukrainian soldiers noticed Lomikovsky walking alone on the road in the evening. She was immediately handed over to the so-called “White Angels”, a police group that evacuates Ukrainian citizens living at the front. She was taken to an evacuee shelter and helped to contact relatives.

Lomikovska said that she also survived the Second World War. “But I have to go through this war too, and in the end I’m left with nothing,” she said. “That war was not like this. I saw that war. Not a single house burned down in our neighborhood at that time. But now everything is on fire,” she told her rescuer.

The executive director of the Ukrainian bank, which is one of the largest in the country, announced on his Telegram channel that the bank would buy Lomikovskaya’s house after hearing the story about the escape of the elderly woman. “Monobank” will buy Lidia Stepanivna a house, and she will definitely be able to live in it until these scoundrels are kicked out of our land,” said Oleh Horokhovskyi.

Lydia Stepanivna Lomikovskaya, 98, is helped by a Ukrainian police officer after she fled Russian-occupied territory in Donetsk region, Ukraine, on April 26, 2024.
