Francis will participate in a meeting on artificial intelligence. At the last UN General Assembly, the Holy See called for the creation of an international institution on artificial intelligence issues. This will be the first time the Pope will attend the G7 summit. It is not yet known whether he will participate in person or online.

In his message on the World Day of Peace, the Holy Father points to the importance of artificial intelligence. In it, he reminds us that “technologies using various algorithms can extract data from the digital footprints left on the Internet that allow the control of people’s habits for commercial or political purposes, often without their knowledge, thereby limiting their conscious freedom of choice. In fact, on the Web, which is characterized by information abundance, can structure the flow of data according to selection criteria that the user does not always perceive.”

The Holy See has issued the so-called Rome Call on Ethics in the Field of Artificial Intelligence, signed by several large international companies as well as representatives of various religions.

We remind you that on April 24, the mentioned Rome call was also signed by the digital communication technology company “Cisco Systems”, which is a leader in the creation of the Internet network, as well as in the production of hardware and telecommunications equipment.

Commenting on this important event, the head of the Pontifical Life Protection Academy, Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, emphasized that the company “Cisco Systems” plays an important role in the implementation and application of artificial intelligence. He reminded that the Vatican first proposed to consider artificial intelligence from an ethical perspective already in 2020. “Today we know that artificial intelligence is no longer just a matter of a particular industry, and the argument about the ethics of its development is more urgent than ever,” he explained.

For his part, Chuck Robbins said that the principles of the Ethical Call are in line with his company’s belief that technology should be developed “based on the highest level of trust to promote an inclusive future for all.”

The signing ceremony of the Rome Call took place in the Vatican. Before that, a delegation from the company “Cisco Systems” came to the audience with the Holy Father.

The ethics call was signed in February 2020 by Microsoft, IBM, FAO and the Italian Department of Education, Science and Innovation. The purpose of the document is to promote the joint responsibility of international organizations, governments, institutions and the private sector in an effort to create a future in which everyone can benefit from technological progress, so that this progress guarantees the protection of the dignity of each individual and the protection of our common home.
