Polls show that the current president Gitans Nausėda could get the most support in the Lithuanian presidential elections on Sunday, May 12. However, he is unlikely to reach the required 50% of the vote, so a second round of elections will have to be held on May 26, in which the current prime minister, the conservative parties in the ruling coalition could face him Fatherland Union – Christian Democrats of Lithuania candidate Ingrīda Šimonīte or independent candidate lawyer Igns Vēgēle, whose support differs by only a few percentage points.

As noted The Atlas News, the main issues of concern to voters in the presidential election campaign are Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and its potential threat to Lithuania, which is forcing a rise in national defense spending, as well as migration and citizenship issues, especially in light of the continued illegal immigration of migrants from Belarus, which is perceived as part of the joint hybrid war of Belarus and Russia against the West. It should be noted that at the same time as the presidential election on Sunday, voting in the referendum on the abolition of the ban on dual citizenship will take place. In their election programs, the candidates have also focused on economic problems, financial inequality and climate change.
