Riga councils This week, the Finance and Administration Affairs Committee approved the allocation of funding for the 1st stage of the restoration and reconstruction of the Riga 700-year anniversary pavilion in Kronvalda Park. This year, 120,942 euros have been allocated for the planned works. The work will continue for the next two years.

Gunārs Nāgels, director of the Riga Monuments Agency, emphasizes: “This pavilion in Kronvalda Park is the only one left from Riga’s 700th anniversary celebrations, so it must be preserved as a piece of history.”

“We are on the eve of work, and after all three rounds of work, it should be crowned with a full restoration with the return of a special, very original glass ceiling mosaic in the dome of the pavilion, which will delight the viewer,” says Rita Našeniece, head of the Cultural and Historical Material Heritage Commission of Riga City Council.

On April 12 of this year, the Riga Monuments Agency concluded the procurement, as a result of which the total costs were determined – 368,499 euros (together with value added tax, construction supervision and author supervision). To start the 1st stage of the project, 120,942 euros are needed from the 2024 budget of Riga municipality.

The project is divided into three stages:

  • 1st stage in 2024 – 120,942 euros;
  • 2nd stage in 2025 – 118,442 euros;
  • Stage 3 in 2026 – 129,114 euros.

During the implementation of the project, the part of the drum built during the previous reconstruction of the pavilion, which is located under the dome, and the roof will be demolished; restored yellow brickwork, pilasters, arches and gable interiors; cleaned paintwork; stitching of brick surfaces, restoration of plinths, eaves and various decorative elements will be carried out; created and installed a glass dome.

In June 2021, the architectural and artistic inventory of the Riga 700-year anniversary pavilion was carried out, which was refined at the end of 2023. Now the dome has disappeared, the shape of the roof covering has changed, the height does not match the proportions and seems to sink into the overall structure. When changing the dome, the height of the base of the dome, or tambur, was changed – it was raised and massive eaves were created. A new polygonal border with openings was created above the eaves and new acroteria were placed on the border (ssculptural decorations in the corners or tops of building pediments).

60s-70s of the last century. years, the pavilion was used as a warehouse for park cleaning tools. Possible repair works were carried out in the 1930s, 1960s and 1970s. In 2000, the pavilion got a new color.

In honor of Riga’s 700th anniversary, the stone pavilion built in 1901 is located in Kronvalda Park (former Strēlnieku Garden). The pavilion was built to expand the space of the 1901 exhibition on the Esplanade, for which many pavilions, cafes, restaurants, exhibition rooms were built. The park is located in the territory of the historical center of Riga and is a cultural monument of local importance.
