Eight young people are suspected of drug smuggling from the USA in Lithuania, four of whom have been arrested in the pre-trial investigation of the Customs Criminal Service.
As informed by the Lithuanian law enforcement institutions, during the investigation, more than 34 kilograms of narcotic substances – mainly marijuana – were confiscated against the 18-20-year-olds, the illegal market value of which is almost one million euros.
Gedvīds Vaivada, the representative of the Vilnius District Prosecutor’s Office, said that a pre-trial investigation is being conducted into the possession of narcotic substances with and without the intention to distribute them, as well as into drug smuggling.
Officially, the suspect status has been established for eight Lithuanian citizens, four of whom have been arrested.
All the 18-20-year-old suspects are unemployed, some of them are studying and some may have been involved in criminal activities as minors.
As Arūns Ivoška, the head of the Narcotics Control Department of the Criminal Service of the Customs, said, the pre-trial investigation into this case began last May, when shipments of marijuana from the USA were discovered during customs inspections.
Authorities seized 34 kilograms of marijuana and “a small amount of cocaine and hallucinogenic mushrooms,” he said, adding that the value of the drugs on the black market reached 900,000 euros. Illegal substances were distributed in Vilnius and its surroundings.
The investigation revealed that it is not about individual shipments or individuals, but about several groups of individuals who coordinate and plan their activities to smuggle drugs into Lithuania from third countries, Ivoška said.
