On Thursday, April 25, the Saeima adopted amendments to the Food Circulation Supervision Law in the third – final – reading, which obligates the country of production of food products to be indicated at points of sale.

The country in question will have to be indicated in writing or with a picture of its flag. The exception will be products manufactured in Russia and Belarus, for which information about the country of manufacture will have to be provided only in writing.

“I have repeatedly emphasized that in stores it is necessary to indicate the country of production of the products on food products in a way that is easy for consumers to understand. This information will help avoid misleading marketing slogans and product names, as well as give buyers confidence that their wallets are not supporting Russian and Belarusian aggression in Ukraine. I am satisfied with the decision taken by the Saeima,” says Minister of Agriculture Armands Krauze.

Indicating the country of production on food products in a clear and comprehensible manner will not only ensure consumers’ right to be informed, but will also promote the consumption of locally sourced food.

The new requirements will enter into force from September 1, 2024.
