Since the entry into force of the new legislation in November of last year, there was a three-month transition period during which vehicles with Russian license plates had to be re-registered in Latvia in order to be able to travel with them on national roads. The service at the Directorate of Road Traffic Safety cost 50 euros and was performed for a total of 57 vehicles.

MĀRTIņŠ MĀLMEISTERS, CSDD REPRESENTATIVE:
“Since February 15, Csdd can no longer re-register vehicles registered in Russia. The only way for vehicles registered in Russia to stay in Latvia is 24 hours in transit.”

If a vehicle with Russian registration plates is in Latvia for more than 24 hours, the State Police has the right to confiscate the vehicle. So far, such a punishment has been applied to only one car – the “Lada” Zhiguli. The State Police states that three criminal proceedings have been initiated for illegal activities, such as license plate forgery.

TV24 received information that there is an illegal scheme, that is, Russian citizens do not register vehicles in Latvia, but choose to get Ukrainian registration plates. Neither the state police nor the Road Safety Directorate confirm the existence of such an illegal scheme. CSDD added that Ukrainian license plates also need to be re-registered, but this has been facilitated in Latvia.

MĀRTIņŠ MĀLMEISTERS, CSDD REPRESENTATIVE:
“These vehicles do not have to receive a certificate of conformity that they meet the technical requirements set by the European Union, because this is one big problem with vehicles directly imported from third countries, because they often do not meet the requirements of the European Union, which have been set, so to speak, by the technical commission. ”

The State Revenue Service informs that 13 light vehicles with Russian license plates have been banned from entering Latvia so far.

Motor vehicles with Belarusian license plates could also be banned from driving on Latvian roads. The responsible ministries have developed proposals for amendments to the laws, but the head of the Saeima’s National Economy, Agrarian Environment and Regional Policy Commission responsible for this issue, Skaidrīte Ābrama from Progresīvajie TV24 stated that these amendments to the law have not yet reached the parliament.
