The state electric car manufacturing giant BYD is based in the Chinese city of Shenzhen, and if we can believe what the company says, then Shenzhen has become the first city in China where there are more fast charging plugs than gas filling guns. We at Kursor have talked a lot about cheap Chinese electric cars – they are cheap not only in Europe, but also in China, and they all need to be charged somewhere.

Already last year, the company announced an ambitious plan, which foresees that by 2025 as many charging points will be built as there are gas stations in the city. It is clear that one gas station has several filling guns and pumps, and charging points also have many plugs, so that more cars can be charged at one place at the same time. It is important to add here that these are not such fast chargers, but ones that can charge an electric car up to 80% in 10 minutes. Of course, percentages mean nothing and battery capacity is important, but it is clear that we are talking about high-power charging equipment.

The latest data from urban planning authorities show that there are at least 362 such fast charging points in the city, located in industrial parks, office districts and other places where a large number of cars gather every day and need charging.

According to data from the Shenzhen power grid operator, 670 million kilowatt-hours of electricity were consumed in the city for charging electric cars in the first quarter of this year – 11% more than in the same period last year. The city, of course, needs to carefully plan its infrastructure expansion so that the electricity supply infrastructure in Shenzhen, which has a population of about 12 million people, is not overloaded.
