“Secondly, do not hope for that preparation as a miracle drug that will cure you after a week. But you have to work on it yourself. Then the result won’t make you wait,” said the family doctor in an interview with Maija Rozīti-Krishtopani in Star FM’s column every Thursday. She emphasizes that “there are things that the patient has to do himself”.

In the case of joint pain, high hopes are usually placed directly on physiotherapy. “Physiotherapists will instruct the patient – how to exercise correctly, which muscle group to stress more, which to relax more,” said the doctor. In physiotherapy, a person can also be taught the correct movements so that muscle functions are restored, as well as the range of motion increases.

When asked about the first signs of joint problems, the doctor indicated – cracking. This is the first symptom of the problem. Although the crunching is initially painless, it still indicates that a person should start thinking about the health of his joints.

In most young people, cracking is caused by overexertion. Perhaps something was done wrong when playing sports or experiencing other types of physical exertion. “If he is a young person and wants to continue to associate his life with sports or professional sports, which are often very traumatic and end with fractures, then it is necessary to think preventively – what to do to preserve the health of the joints,” emphasizes family doctor Werner.

It has already been studied what makes up articular cartilage. It is also known that it is formed at the age of 18-20, and it remains that way throughout life. Type II collagen is essential for skin. And it is included in the new dietary supplement MAGNEFlex, created in Latvia. Type 2 collagen is an innovative substance that helps maintain the function and health of cartilage, allowing the synthesis of joint fluid and promoting flexible movements. It’s also one of the key components in reducing inflammation in osteoarthritis, explains Werner.

“Of course, you should not expect that immediately – from one or two tablets – within one week, all complaints will go away. But if we use it as a course, for at least three months, then we can also evaluate whether the problems have decreased,” Werner says.

A starting point should be recorded when a person starts taking a collagen supplement and then to assess whether it is having an effect. The doctor recommends a longer course of nutritional supplements for middle-aged and even older people than for young people.

In the case of osteoarthritis, it is important to reduce the use of anti-inflammatory and painkillers as much as possible, and to be safer for the liver and kidneys. In these situations, the ideal route would be to extend the remission period between pain flare-ups, which the GP suggests can be achieved with appropriate nutritional supplementation and exercise.

“Believe me, physiotherapists sometimes work miracles,” emphasizes Werner. “Even a pronounced limitation of movement that a person had before visiting a specialist, after several months of hard exercise and using a good nutritional supplement, is completely preventable. Therefore, I heartily recommend you to combine two things together. And I think that after three months you will be amazed at the result.”

Dietary supplement. A nutritional supplement does not replace a full and balanced diet!
