Silanovska-Davkova won around 40% of the votes. Incumbent Stevo Pendarovskis, who is supported by the ruling centre-left Social Democrats, is in second place with around 20% of the vote.

Silanovska-Davkova and Pendarovskis will compete in the second round of elections on May 8. The current president’s chances of winning it are slim. Voter turnout was almost 50 percent.

“This is the beginning of a new era,” Silianovska-Davkova said. On the other hand, her competitor admitted that the big difference in votes was a surprise. The two politicians are old rivals, so this election is also a battle of principles.

North Macedonia currently has many issues that the next president will have to deal with. One of them is how to deal with relations with Bulgaria. It is currently blocking North Macedonia’s path to the European Union until the country’s constitution mentions the Bulgarian minority.
