Addressing her colleagues at the European Union (EU) Speakers’ Conference in Spain, the Speaker of the Saeima, Daiga Mieriņa, invited the speakers of the EU member states to attend the third parliamentary summit of the international Crimea platform, which will take place in Riga in October.

“Together, let’s affirm unwavering and strong support for Ukraine and consistently continue to shed light internationally on Russia’s aggression and the crimes committed by it,” called the Speaker of the Saeima. The summit is planned to improve the understanding of the inevitability of Russia’s responsibility by strengthening the order based on international law.

Holding the parliamentary summit of the International Crimean Platform in Riga is part of Latvia’s comprehensive support to Ukraine and an investment in strengthening the rules-based international order, and it will be held in close cooperation with the Ukrainian Parliament – the Verkhovna Rada. The summit is being held to increase the international community’s understanding and support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.

Continuing her visit to Spain, the Speaker of the Saeima held bilateral meetings with the Marshal of the Polish Sejm, Szymon Holowny (Szymon Holownia), Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Serbia, Elvira Kovač (Elvira Kovač) and the vice-speaker of the Swedish Riksdag, Julia Kronlid (Julia Kronlid), as well as colleagues from the Baltic States – Speaker of the Estonian Parliament Lauri Husar (Lauri Hussar) and the Speaker of the Lithuanian Seimas Viktoria Chmilitis-Nilsen (Victoria Chmilytė-Nielsen).

During the talks, the Speaker of the Saeima emphasized the need to strengthen the capacity of European countries to act and the military industry in order to be able to provide Ukraine with all the necessary assistance in a timely manner.

The Conference of Presidents of EU Parliaments is an annual forum for speakers to exchange opinions, information and experience. It is attended by the presidents of the parliaments of the EU member states, the president of the European Parliament, as well as the presidents of the parliaments of the EU candidate countries. This time, the conference of the presidents of the EU parliaments takes place from April 21 to 23 in Spain.
