Although elections cannot be held in wartime, Poroshenko has made it clear that he plans to campaign when he can.

Before the elections are held, Ukraine must win over Russia, the ex-president said.

“This war is bigger than Ukraine. It is about world order, freedom, democracy,” he said. “We’re here to fight and save the world.”

An alternative plan could be a campaign for a seat in the European Parliament when Ukraine joins the European Union, the ex-president said.

Poroshenko was president for five years, but lost to Volodymyr Zelensky in the 2019 elections.

According to the constitution, the presidential election should have been held last Sunday, but it was postponed.

Public opinion polls show that the majority of Ukrainians are against holding elections in wartime conditions.

Although Zelensky’s term expires on May 20, a provision in the constitution allows him to remain in office until a successor takes over.
